What does it mean when a virus is airborne?

Does UV disinfection kill airborne viruses?

The most common airborne disease known to us is the common cold. If a virus is airborne it is known to be transmitted person to person simply by droplets in the air. For example, if a person who carries Covid-19 talks, coughs, sneezes, or simply breathes, people in close vicinity with the carrier have a high risk of transmission. This may sound alarming to many as the virus becomes susceptible to increasing numbers. To reduce your risk, there are some precautions you can take such as wearing a mask, social distancing, and disinfecting the area.

How to Reduce the Risks of Airborne Viruses

Wearing a mask

With the novel coronavirus, doctors and scientists have emphasized the wearing of masks as it helps prevent particles from lingering in the air. Aerosols can spread at an average of 6 feet before those droplets fall to the ground. This is where the 6 feet social distancing rule is attributed to. Carriers of viruses will be able to lessen the risk of transmission wearing a mask, although the efficacy depends on the quality and material that is worn. Still, this is a crucial measure that should be enforced.

Social distancing

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that social distancing is “keeping a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household.” This means that you are keeping a 6 feet distance from others regardless of being indoors or outdoors. As previously mentioned, air droplets can travel an average of 6 feet. Social distancing will reduce the risk of inhaling aerosol viruses.

Professional disinfecting services

Another way to reduce the risk of airborne viruses is the use of professional disinfecting services. Ultraviolet light, specifically UVC, is effective in killing airborne mediated germs without harming individuals. UVC light is the high-energy portion of the ultraviolet spectrum that has a wavelength of 200 to 280 nanometers. Scientific research has proven UVC light's 99.9% effectiveness in inactivating pathogenic viruses and bacteria. By lethally disrupting its genetic material, UVC light renders viruses unable to reproduce. For more information, you can consult a disinfecting professional or check out our website here.
