Sources of Carbon Footprint
What is carbon footprint and how does it impact climate change?
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases and specifically carbon dioxide emitted by something (such as a person’s activities or a product manufacture and transport) during a given period. Climate change has been impacted greatly by carbon footprint in recent decades as it contributes to warming the earth. The rising temperatures will threaten wildlife and destroy ecosystems.
You may now wonder how you can calculate your carbon footprint or if your daily activities impact greenhouse gas emissions.
Here are some sources of greenhouse gas emissions from the United States Environmental Protection Agency:
Transportation🚗
Transportation produces the most greenhouse gases. With the growth of the automotive industry in recent years, 8 in 10 individuals own cars. As a result, fossil fuel combustion of vehicles has affected the environment considerably.
Electricity Production⚡
Fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas are used for electricity. This made up 26.9 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. in 2018, making it the second largest source following transportation.
Industrial Production🏭
The third source of greenhouse gases come from industrial production. The goods that we purchase are products made through burning fossil fuels which emits greenhouse gases.
These three sources generate approximately 77 percent of greenhouse gases in the United States. As more than three-fourths of fossil fuels are fueled by humans, it is important to understand how this affects our environment and take practical steps in reducing the impact.
